Regarding Gravity

Matthieu Brouillard / 2017 / 79 min. / Canada / FRENCH / ENGLISH SUBS , Spanish

Synopsis

Friends Christian, 63, and Bruce, 71, each have their burden to bear: Christian suffers from a genetic condition that severely impairs his vision and makes his skin hypersensitive to sunlight, while Bruce is hard of hearing and bipolar. But both men share a dream: to fly, defy gravity, rise up against the limitations of their bodies. As a very thorough and rational person, Christian has mastered the techniques of paragliding, and, after years of struggle, he has been given permission to fly on his own. He is now persuading the more erratic and turbulent Bruce to do the same and follow him all the way to Mont Blanc. An intimate and unsettling portrait of two non-conforming individuals, this documentary with Beckettian undertones takes us on a bracing journey into luminous celestial heights and the dark intricacies of the human psyche.

Biography

Matthieu Brouillard is a visual artist born in Montreal in 1976. After practicing drawing and painting for a few years, he turned to photography in 2003 with the impression that this medium would be better able to translate the images he has in mind. Since then, he has created photographic corpuses and videographic installations that combine documentary and staging and reinvesting certain themes and stylistic traits stemming from mythology (Icarus) and the pictorial tradition (Grünewald and Goya, Baroque and Mannerism). His plastic work shows a marked interest for the human figure, and more specifically for the male body, which he depicts most often in a situation of constraint or deviation from certain social and / or aesthetic norms. His work has appeared in numerous publications (Ciel Variable, SHOTS Magazine, Samuel Beckett Today, The Writings ...) and has been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions dedicated to the arts (VU, Dazibao, Oboro, Le Fresnoy, Kunsthalle Bern , PhotoforumPasquArt, Elysee Museum ...). Matthieu (PhD, 2013) has been a lecturer and visiting scholar at various universities and art schools, including the University of Zurich, the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe, the University of Art and Design of Geneva and the University of Bern. He has published three books of photographs - "Narragonia" (I SAW, 2007), "Darkness Implacable" (Sagamie, 2012) and "Coming Through the Fog" (with Donigan Cumming, FOFA Gallery, 2013) - whose series of images finely orchestrated heralds its passage to the cinema. Shot over a two-year period, "Whatever Gravity Matters" is her first film.
