Director's statement
The project was born long before I started to consider a career in cinema. When I was young, my father used to take me and my brothers to different places to make films of all kinds. A Star-wars movie and a cowboy movie starring us are now archived on hard drives at the bottom of one of my drawers. These are undoubtedly my first experiences of shooting and these have obviously had an impact on my first passion, which is cinema. Love in the Desert is inspired by family films from my youth, but still tells a dramatic story that links a childhood cowboy story to a past story between the father and mother of two young cowboys. My film is a eulogy on forgiveness, but also a melancholy portrait of family love, told through some cute and epic snippets from a western.
The film is titled Love in the desert in tribute to the track of the same name composed by Stefie Shock, who played in several video montages that my father edited. I wanted to explore the feeling of nostalgia that I feel when listening to video clips filmed by my parents. I find a certain magic that makes me happy, but I also find a sadness that highlights these objects from my past. The music is often a vehicle for this magic that I feel, so it was essential that the soundtrack took an important place in the film. I composed three tracks to accompany the scenes inspired by the sound frames composed by Enio Morricone. I also wanted to mix the electronic sounds with the soundtrack to support the mix between the tinnitus that comes with the western film and the digitality, which is reminiscent of the video camera. Love in the desert is a moment, a brief poetic capture of a family sailing between Québec and Lévis.
