Director's statement
It is a project I’ve lived with for a long time with my partner Harold Rhéaume, in other words we wanted to make a film together. During summer we joined forces in writing a story, and shaped our universe inspiring ourselves in The Crown Shyness’s phenomenon. We were seeing a clear and rich parallel to explore between this phenomenon and men’s social relationships.
As an artist I wish to show my vision and artistic fantasies to people, and to put myself in a position deliberately very directive. I knew exactly what I wanted, about the image, atmosphere, scenery, costumes or the acting. I was transparent with my coworkers on that process, which they all played along. I modelled myself the sceneries in 3D, which were constructed as is in studio. I developed a mood board with a specific idea of costumes, atmospheres, hair and so on, so that any artist joining me could have a clear and direct vision of what I wanted to accomplish. I didn’t want people to propose me anything for this project, which I assumed all along the process. I knew with whom I wanted to work. Fortunately, no one refused my proposition to work with me on that project. I was able to direct artists and technicians way more experienced than me and whose work I was admiring for a long time. They were essential to this project as they are the reason my ideas became reality, and they did it with such richness and subtlety.
The fact that Harold, who is a choreographer, blind trusted me and let himself directed as an actor allowed me to explore the direction of actors and to couple dance and acting so that we could find a unique and minimalist language of which I am very proud of.
